About the Bedlam Fashion contest

The Bedlam Faction is seeking talented designers to create costumes for their fantastical production of Aphra Behn's Emperor of the Moon. By entering this one-of-a-kind contest, you will join other designers in a collaborative theatre experience, showcase your talent in a fashion show and 13 performances of the play, and compete for a grand prize of $1,000.

To enter, you will read a scene of the play and submit a creative brief describing how you would imaginatively clothe/costume the characters in that scene. Based upon the creative briefs submitted, we will invite selected designers to participate in the Bedlam Fashion contest.

If you are chosen as a designer, here's what you're getting yourself into:

  • You will have three months to design and construct approximately six costumes for our new play, Emperor of the Moon, which opens in November.
  • In October, your completed pieces will be showcased at Bedlam Fashion, a fall fashion extravaganza, which will feature your Emperor designs, local musical performers, and celebrity judges.
  • You will explore your creative freedom in designing the look of the characters of the play.
  • You will find or purchase the materials to create your costumes; these can be as cheap, extravagant, gaudy, or elegant as you would like.
  • Emphasis will be placed on working collaboratively with the actors, Co-Artistic Directors, musicians, and other fashion and costume designers to create the glorious world of the Emperor of the Moon.
  • You will compete in three rounds of judging for the final grand prize of $1,000:

    (1) the Bedlam Fashion Extravaganza Critics' Picks.
    (2) the Audience Choice, based on audience ratings at 13 performances at the Austin Playhouse.
    (3) the Bedlam Criteria, a set of ratings (including factors such as collaboration, innovation, and creativity) completed by the Emperor cast and the Bedlam Co-Artistic Directors.
