Scene Description

The characters:

  • Two women: Elaria and her French cousin Bellemante.
  • Two men: the women’s lovers, Charmante and Cinthio.
  • Scaramouche, a colorful fool.
  • Dancers attending a party.

The setting:

Any time period and any place you desire, in the known universe or out of it.

The plot:

Elaria’s stern old father is out of town, and the young women are having a party. Charmante and Cinthio send the ladies some “habits,” or clothes, for the party. It is not specified what type of clothes they are, but Elaria is extremely pleased with them. As the guests arrive, everyone dances, while the fool Scaramouche entertains the company.

Design concepts:

The costume designs should contain elements of sensuality, of a wildness that is perhaps still controlled -- or that perhaps has burst its bounds and is in full swing when the Doctor comes home. You may express this concept in any type of period or style, whatever inspires you most.

Instructions:

Think about the scene and what kind of clothes you think the young people should be wearing. Create three different color sketches of the costume designs you have in mind. Focus each sketch on a different character (for example, you could sketch Elaria, a dancer, and Scaramouche). These sketches do not need to be professional-quality; just try to get across a rough idea of the designs in your head. Label each sketch with a title or number.

On the back of the Creative Brief Cover Sheet, summarize your design ideas for the scene, and why you have chosen the specific designs within each sketch. Refer to each sketch by its title or number.
