In the last days of the Roman Empire, as the barbaric Goths descend upon the Italian Peninsula bent on the destruction of its capital, the last Emperor of Rome, Romulus the Great, calmly awaits their arrival in the comforting presence of the citizens he loves the most.

Nothing is as it seems in this "historical play without historical basis," a work by Gore Vidal adapted from Friederich Dürrenmatt's Romulus der Grosse. Dürrenmatt, a Swiss playwright and satirist who lived in Europe during the horror of World War II, sketches with his caustic pen a world of both humor and betrayal, in a play that seeks to understand the meaning of true heroism.
